6th New Jersey Infantry, Company C
23rd North Carolina Infantry, Company D
2 Cups of Sugar
1 Tbsp. Water
1/2 Cup Vinegar
1 Piece of butter the size of an egg
1/4 Tsp. vanilla extract
1 Medium saucepan
1 Wooden spoon
1 Platter (Well buttered)
Add into saucepan your vinegar, water and sugar and place on the stove on a medium-high heat. Add butter and bring up to a boil. Stir until sugar and butter are dissolved. Let cook around 15 to 20 minutes without stirring. Care must be taken not to burn the mixture. A good rule of thumb to follow is to watch the mixture cook and remove it from the heat when it starts to turn a slight golden color. After that time pour the solution into the bettered platter and let stand. After solution hardens break into small pieces and sprinkle a good amount of confectionary sugar on the pieces. This will add a great taste and keep the pieces from sticking together.
* Note: As with the candy above, care should be taken with
the hot solution.
